The Fifth Annual Bingham Lecture: 'The Rule of Law and the Sustainable Development Goals: The Role of Business'
Chair: The Right Hon the Baroness Hale of Richmond DBE, President of The Supreme Court
Irene Khan, Director General of the International Development Law Organization and former Secretary General of Amnesty International will deliver the lecture.
Michael Stopford, Managing Director of Oxford Analytica, will respond from a business perspective. Michael has held senior positions in intergovernmental organisations such as the UN, the World Bank and NATO as well as in the private sector with the Coca Cola Company, Exxon Mobil and Syngenta.
At a time when entrenched conflicts, violent extremism and political turmoil are exacting a heavy toll, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development sets out the most ambitious global development agenda yet articulated and offers a shared platform for action. The seventeen SDGs are bold and universal. They holistically address different dimensions of sustainable development and recognize the interlinkages between them. They acknowledge for the first time that development cannot be sustainable without good governance, access to justice and Rule of Law. Agenda 2030 also recognises that business and the private sector are important partners in the worldwide effort to solve sustainable development challenges, and calls on them to apply their creativity and innovation to do so.
The lecture will address the potentially game changing nature of the Sustainable Development Goals and the essential contribution of the Rule of Law to their realisation. It will take stock of progress and highlight both the challenges and opportunities that have emerged since the Goals were adopted more than two years ago. Finally, it will examine why the success of the SDGs is of critical importance for the private sector and offer concrete suggestions on how business can contribute to achieving and sustaining development.
