Expert Roundtable: Modern Slavery Data for Investor Action

Event Details

The Bingham Centre for the Rule of Law and the Alan Turing Institute are working on a project focused on how to ensure investors and asset managers have access to high-quality, accurate data on modern slavery risks in investment portfolios. This project, part of the government's new Policy and Evidence Centre for Modern Slavery and Human Rights, aims to:

• Scope the relevant types of data source
• Review analytical methods and strategies for extracting actionable insights from data, and
• Consider ways of presenting such insights in practical and scalable ways to investment decision-makers, be it to inform selection decisions or company engagement activities and other aspects of active ownership strategies

Obtaining high-quality, accurate data on modern slavery prevalence and risk is essential for helping to end modern slavery. One route to achieving this is to give better data to those who may be unknowingly supporting slavery. This project focuses on the role of investors in combating modern slavery given the increased interest in ESG and responsible investing, growing threat of penalties from government action and relative neglect of the information needs of investment decision-makers in relation to this topic to date.
