Labour's Shadow Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs will set out how a future Labour government would seek to restore Britain's global influence and reputation by putting the rule of law at the heart of its foreign policy.

About the Speaker

David Lammy is the Labour Member of Parliament for Tottenham. In November 2021, he was appointed Shadow Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs. David previously served as Labour's Shadow Secretary of State for Justice and as the Shadow Lord Chancellor. From 2002-2010, in the Blair and Brown governments, he was a Minister in several departments, including the Department of Constitutional Affairs, the Department of Culture, Media and Sport and the Department of Innovation, Universities and Skills.

David Lammy studied law at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) Law School and went on to be the first Black Briton to attend Harvard Law School. He is an Associate Tenant at Doughty Street chambers. David is the author of two books: 'Out of the Ashes' (2011), which examines the causes of the 2011 London riots, as well as 'Tribes: How Our Need to Belong Can Make or Break Society' (2020). He won both GQ's and the Political Studies Association's Politician of the Year in 2018.
