The Bingham Centre for the Rule of Law will host the Attorney General, the Rt Hon Lord Hermer KC, as the speaker for the 2024 Bingham Lecture. Richard Hermer KC was called to the Bar in 1993 and took silk in 2009, serving recently as Head of Chambers at Matrix.

Appointed as Attorney General in July 2024, Lord Hermer has spoken publicly about the importance of the Rule of Law in public life and in his role as chief legal adviser to His Majesty's Government, attending cabinet. The Attorney General will speak on the Rule of Law in the Age of Populism. How do we promote the rule of law? How do we protect it? How do we show and speak about its value?

The lecture will be chaired by Baroness Kennedy of The Shaws KC, and will be followed by Q&A.

The Bingham Lecture series honours the memory of the Rt. Hon Lord Bingham of Cornhill KG after whom the Bingham Centre is named. This flagship series of in-person lectures, which was launched in 2012 and paused for the Covid-19 pandemic, has previously featured speakers including the late Lord Judge, Lord Neuberger of Abbotsbury, Justice Angelika Nussberger (Vice-President, European Court of Human Rights, 2017-2019), Irene Khan (Director, International Development Law Organisation) and John Bercow MP (while Speaker of the House of Commons).
