Venue: British Institute of International and Comparative Law, Charles Clore House, 17 Russell Square, London and Online
Event Details
The Bingham Centre for the Rule of Law is undertaking a project to examine ways of promoting more effective oversight of the implementation of public inquiry recommendations in the UK.
More effective follow-up of inquiry recommendations is needed to avoid a repeat of the failures identified in past inquiry reports. There is currently momentum to address the problem of oversight of recommendations from a number of sources, both in Parliament and in civil society.
This workshop will consider the mechanisms currently used or proposed in the UK to oversee the implementation of public inquiry recommendations (e.g., oversight by government and public bodies, by Parliament, by inquiries themselves, by other mechanisms, including proposals for a National Oversight Mechanism, and by advocacy groups and those with lived experience of inquiries); the types of recommendations that public inquiries make; and wider themes relating to the framing and development of inquiry recommendations. The types of recommendations that public inquiries make and how they are framed is relevant to both the design of inquiries themselves and the design of oversight mechanisms.
Panel 1 - Institutional mechanisms of oversight
Panel 2 - Inquiries, their recommendations, courts and the public space
This project is funded by the Joseph Rowntree Charitable Trust.
