Henry Screaton
Biography
Henry Screaton joined the Bingham Centre for the Rule of Law at BIICL in October 2025. He is a Research Fellow working on the Bingham Centre project 'Promoting More Effective Oversight of the Implementation of Recommendations Made by UK Public Inquiries'.
Before joining the Centre, Henry worked as a research assistant and legal assistant at the Law Commission, first on the Contempt of Court project and later the Criminal Appeals project. He took part in the public consultations for both projects, including by publishing articles advertising the latter consultation in Archbold Review and the Criminal Law Review. He researched public inquiries from domestic and comparative perspectives in the context of criminal appeals. Henry continues to work part-time at the Law Commission, assisting with the preparation of the Criminal Appeals project's final report. In 2023-24, Henry was a judicial assistant at the Court of Appeal to the then-Vice President of the Criminal Division, Lord Justice Holroyde, and to Lord Justice Lewis, working primarily in public and criminal law. In 2024, he won the ALBA moot on the "Government by WhatsApp" Good Law Project v Prime Minister case, which centred on public scrutiny, records retention and judicial oversight.
Henry holds a BA History degree from the University of Oxford, and completed the law conversion and bar vocational studies courses at City, University of London, before being called to the Bar of England and Wales in July 2024.
