Curriculum Context

The 2013 government review of the citizenship curriculum has resulted in a stronger focus on understanding law and democracy .At KS3, there has been a move away from the language of human rights and towards a language of 'precious liberties' and at Key Stage 4, a move towards concepts of accountability, transnational and international relations, human rights and international law, and diversity of national, religious and ethnic identities in the UK. Introducing a rule of law framework as a foundation at KS3 prepares students for the more demanding areas that they will consider in KS4, providing a framework within which law, rights and democracy can be understood in the UK and abroad.

The resources also provide a valuable introduction to the law and justice content of the Citizenship Studies GCSE, covering topics such as democracy and government, the legal system in England and Wales and identities and diversity in UK society.

In November 2014, the Department for Education issued guidance to schools to teach and promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs. Against this backdrop, the project provides a vehicle for understanding law, democracy, rights and responsibilities in the UK and abroad through rule of law teaching and supports teachers in meeting these requirements.
