Stand Up for The Rule of Law

Three Brazilian pannelists from our webinar last week on law-making in illiberal regimes have put their names to an open letter in defence of academic freedom and the Rule of Law. This is in support of their colleague Professor Conrado Hübner Mendes, from the University of São Paulo who has been threatened with criminal charges by the Brazillian Attorney General. The substance of the charge relates to critical comments Professor Mendes has made in a newspaper article about the criminal justice system of Brazil under President Bolsanaro. Professor Meyer and Professor Bustamante, who both spoke at our webinar, write that this threat of criminal charges undermines constitutional protections and academic freedom in Brazil.

The Rule of Law is not an abstract theory, it is a principle under threat all around the world right now. That is why our fundraising campaign Stand Up for the Rule of Law: Get on Board for Bingham! is so important.

We are extremely grateful to all those who have donated to our campaign.

The campaign will be closing on 31 July. We would be delighted if you would consider making a donation to the campaign in its final 24 hours. Your support will help the Bingham Centre to stand up for the Rule of Law in restoring trust in democracy, teaching tomorrow's citizens, ending modern slavery, building back better after Covid  and so much more.

Thank you for your support.
