Weekly Update 19 November 2021
Dear Friends,
On Monday 22 November, the Bingham Centre will hold an event in Belfast, on the topic of the UK Government's Legacy Proposals and the Rule of Law. The Legacy Proposals include a statute of limitations, preventing investigations and prosecutions on all Troubles-related incidents in Northern Ireland, as well as a bar on all civil claims and inquests arising out of the Troubles. This week, a bipartisan group of 21 members of the US Congress published a letter calling on the US Secretary of State to urge the UK Government to reconsider these plans and avoid 'undermining the rule of law'.
Our event is being co-organised with Queen's University Belfast and the Committee on the Administration of Justice. It will take place in the Parliament Buildings at Stormont (shown below), where we will be hosted by Paula Bradshaw MLA.
This week we also bring you news of talks given by Bingham Centre members at the Global Peace Forum in Coventry Cathedral, and the 40th anniversary celebrations of the European Law Students' Association in Vienna.
We are grateful for the increased ability to travel and participate in events like these. However, at the same time, we are seeking to make events available to online audiences where possible. Our Belfast event is open to registration for online participation (or in person attendance for those able to be in Belfast). On 9 December, we will hold an event on The Rule of Law and the Future of Democracy at the British Academy in London, which is already open for livestream registration. Further details on both events are provided at the end of this email.
