Weekly Update 21 January 2022
Dear Friends,
This week brought good news for the Rule of Law. The House of Lords voted down all but one of the late-stage amendments to the Police, Crime, Sentencing, and Courts Bill that were introduced by the government without sufficient opportunity for substantive scrutiny by Parliament. The Bingham Centre recommended such action in response to Rule of Law concerns in our report last week on the Bill.
However, despite this good news, this week's Update also must raise a warning over what may be the latest threat to the Rule of Law arising from a Bill before the UK Parliament. Our Senior Fellow Ronan Cormacain warns that the Nationality and Borders Bill contains provisions which may be contrary to the spirit and intention of the UN Refugee Convention. The Rule of Law Monitoring of Legislation project will publish a report analysing these issues in the coming week.
